Speech-Language Therapy

Speech-language Therapy and Mental Health Counseling

Speech-language therapy and mental health counseling are distinct yet complementary fields that focus on improving overall quality of life.  Speech-language therapy treats all manner of communication and swallowing disorders, while mental health counseling addresses emotional, behavioral, and psychological issues, such as anxiety and depression.

At Our Space Family Counseling, speech-language pathologists (SLP) and mental health counselors (MHC) take a team approach in supporting individuals who can profit from this dual strategy.  Adults, teens and children with emotional, psychological, and interpersonal relationship issues, as well as behavioral challenges, can often benefit from improved communication skills.

The need for these services at times intersect, as communication challenges can be a factor in mental health struggles (e.g., anxiety from stuttering) and mental health issues can affect communication, as is often the case in selective mutism.  In such instances, our team of professionals collaborate to provide holistic care, ensuring our clients can both understand their emotions and articulate them.
